Somatic Experiencing – with Mikayla

  • Library (17:00 – 20:00  slots)
  • See Link for booking

My name is Mikayla and I am a somatic experiencing (SE) student looking to offer this trauma-informed practice to those wanting to learn more about how our nervous systems work and affect our lives. I have been training in SE for the last three years whilst also working in a range of healthcare settings, integrating a more trauma-informed approach into my practice.

With a background in mental health nursing and a belief in accessible mental healthcare, I am delighted to be a part of the Salisbury Centre’s Community Therapy programme. I would be delighted to welcome you into the beautiful setting that is unique to the Salisbury Centre, which is completely conducive to the work we will be doing in the somatic experiencing sessions.

In SE we look at the sensations underneath our feelings and uncover habitual patterns to these feelings. SE facilitates the safe completion of self-protective motor responses of the body. We work with small elements of your ‘story’ (what you have come in with, or what has shown up), noticing how your body (nervous system) responds, titrating these small activations gently. Our bodies learn to self-regulate in a safe and supported space as we now have the time and support to renegotiate a trauma without inducing overwhelm by working slowly.

SE aims to improve nervous system regulation, increase resiliency, improve awareness of the mind-body connection, strengthen boundaries and develop a genuine sense of safety through valuing and encouraging meeting individual needs, noticing what’s supportive/calming, reducing over-responsive threat-responses e.g hypervigilance. Moreover, it can help us to improve our connection with ourselves, the world around us and others.

If you feel you have unresolved trauma that you would like to renegotiate with compassion and a deeper understanding for how your body did the best it could at the time with the resources it had, SE may be helpful. As a complementary therapy, SE can be used as part of a holistic approach to your wellbeing, meaning other therapies and treatments can be used in conjunction.

Seated Chair Massage – with Douglas

  • Seated Massage with Douglas –  Library (9:30 – 12:30) – See Link  for bookings

Meet Douglas. Douglas’ journey as a masseur began while travelling and living in Thailand where he learnt Thai and Ayurvedic massage, first in a secular Buddhist healing centre and then in Australia, covering both Eastern and Western approaches. His journey continued in Edinburgh where he completed a Diploma in Holistic Massage Therapy with the Massage Training Institute, which included Swedish and deep tissue massage. He now specialises in Myofascial Release and is beginning Sports and Remedial Massage training in November 2023.

From the initial consultation Douglas will work with you toward your specific aims, whether stress management or the relief of pain. Swedish massage is excellent for relaxation and as a warmup for deep tissue work on chronically tight or sore muscles. Douglas believes that massage is an essential element of self-care. In his own words, “sharing relaxed and body centred presence is one of life’s greatest gifts.” In his spare time he enjoys nature while hiking, cycling or surfing. His supportive, complementary practices are regular yoga, qi gong, and ongoing training in Non-Violent Communication.

You can contact him on 07796482235 or email doromassage@outlook.com

Acupuncture sessions with Ron (Evening)

My name is Ron and I practice Traditional Chinese Medicine–primarily Acupuncture. I am licensed in the City of Edinburgh, as well as the state of Michigan in the US, and I have been practicing for over a decade. I mix a wide variety of techniques, from TCM to Five Elements, but believe that using gentle methods get the best results, at least in my experience.

For your session, arrive at your posted time and if it is your first treatment with me, there will be a short intake form. Otherwise, sit comfortably or lay out, and I will check your pulses–six on each wrist. After this, I will start at your feet and gently place needles, about 20, on your legs, arms, neck, and occasionally scalp. You are always welcome to ask any questions you might have, and if you would rather not have certain areas treated (some people don’t like having their feet touched, for example), just let me know! There are plenty of other good points we can use. After the needles are set, relax for about half an hour. If you should feel ready to get up at any time, just let me know. I believe that is your body saying it is done with the treatment, and the needles are ready to come out.

After a treatment, some people feel something right away, but most feel something after a sleep cycle or two. Drink lots of good water, though with our evening sessions, maybe just a little so you are not up all night, then see what you notice over the next couple of days.

My treatments provide an alternative to mainstream medicine, without medication, and with little to no side effects. I am happy to help with physical and emotional concerns, as acupuncture is a tool for balance of mind, body, and spirit.

Questions are always welcome, and I can be reached at ron.hough.lac@gmail.com or texts/calls at 07843 786426.

Thank you very much!

Holistic Massage with Beth

  • Holistic Therapeutic Massage with Beth – Well Spring Room (9;00 – 12:00)-
  • See Link  for bookings

My name is Beth and I am a fully qualified therapist in Holistic Therapeutic Massage. My motivation in this work is to offer a space of deep rest and relaxation. I believe in the body’s innate capacity to heal itself; sometimes all we need is a safe space to allow ourselves to let go and be at one. On a physiological level, as well as reducing pain due to muscular tension, massage also increases the flow of blood and lymph fluid, which is essential for good health. On a spiritual level, being held in the care of another and letting go into timeless time facilitates a space in which you can listen deeply to yourself and hear the quieter murmurings of your being. I offer a space in which the wisdom of your body and soul can rise up and be known.

The term ‘holistic’ refers to an integrated and intuitive approach, grounded in an anatomical understanding of the body and learnt techniques, whilst being led by deep listening, embodied sensing and intuition. I will work with you to find the right pressure, and can be as light or as deep as you need.

I am really happy to be involved with the Community Therapies Clinic at the Salisbury Centre because I want to live in a world where these therapies are not reserved for those who can afford it, and this initiative moves us in that direction.

I am fully trained with the Edinburgh School of Holistic Therapy, insured with Balens Insurance and registered with the MTI (Massage Training Institute).
