These storytelling session invite storytellers to share a story dear to them, with a spiritual theme. It will then be followed by a “crack” – Scottish word for conversation – exploring the story, its deeper meanings and how it speaks to us and our world today.

The evenings will be hosted by Olga Bloemen and Susannah Phillipson who will welcome these wonderful storytellers:

15th July – Ailsa Dixon – “The Crofter and the Kelpie”, a traditional Scottish folktale. It’s about having an open mind and a generous heart, but mostly about harnessing the elemental force of nature, knowing that it never truly can be tamed.

29th July – Alice Fernbank – “The wife who stole a heart”,
an epic tale of love, birth and death, from the Kalmuck people, in Siberia.

12th August – Elinor Predota – “Pygmalion and Galatea”. Pygmalion falls in love with his own sculpture of a woman — Aphrodite brings her to life — but what does the sculpture herself think and feel?

26th August – Dougie Strang – “Mac Mhic Ailein and the Deer Woman”, a traditional tale from Lochaber. Old stories shake us out of our modern mindset, reminding us of a different way of being in the world, where each encounter with the ‘other’ has its consequences.

Please arrive from 6pm to settle in and make yourself a cup of tea – we’ll start promptly at 6:15pm.

The Crack a Story sessions are part of the Salisbury Centre’s community programme and are offered on donation (suggested donation £5). All contributions will be split between the storyteller and the Salisbury Centre. Please add the code CAS to your transfer. https://www.salisburycentre.org/donate/

Accompanied children welcome, although the stories are more tailored to adults and those over 12 years old.

If you have any questions, feel free to email us at Susannah @salisburycentre.org and olga @salisburycentre.org.
