Authentic Connection Group

Come to experiment with new ways of relating to others!

“Anything that’s human is mentionable, and anything that is mentionable can be more manageable. When we can talk about our feelings, they become less overwhelming, less upsetting, and less scary. The people we trust with that important talk can help us know that we are not alone.” Mister Rogers

Many people experience their interactions with others as unfulfilling, awkward, boring, or pointless. Is it because people around us are “not the right people”? Not necessarily! One big reason is that we often feel pressured to follow unwritten rules and “scripts” in our relationships – and, we get stuck in them.

That’s what school, family, and much of society teach us. This programming leads us to think that it’s not okay to feel angry and even less so to show it to the other person. We don’t want others to perceive us as sad, because we fear this may mean we’re weak or “troubled.” We don’t say what we want or think because we don’t want to cause someone discomfort.

Sometimes, these unspoken rules help us coexist in harmony. But more often than not, they also make our relationships less authentic and more superficial. They cause us to feel disconnected from or even hostile towards one another. They contribute to many common mental health issues, such as depression and social isolation.

If we want to co-create a world driven by kindness, cooperation, and community, we need to practice these things in our immediate relationships. This can be hard as many people don’t know where to start. This is this group came into being. You can think of it as a fortnightly “laboratory” that allows us to safely experiment with new, more authentic ways of being and connecting.

How would it feel to be able to express more of your authentic thoughts and feelings in the interaction, knowing you won’t be judged? What would it take to show that side of yourself you don’t usually reveal? And what would that change for you, but also for those around you?

Let’s come together to play and find out. Everyone is welcome
